  • Study Shows E-Cigarettes Safer Alternative to Smoking reports South Beach Smoke

(Transportation-News.com, October 26, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- "Considering the hazards associated with cigarette smoking, currently available data suggest that electronic cigarettes are far less harmful, and substituting tobacco with electronic cigarettes may be beneficial to health," says Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos of the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Athens, Greece.

Dr. Farsalinos did admit that the study was short and small, with only 22 people involved in the study. The subjects were only studied immediately before and after using the device.

Researchers compared heart functions of 20 daily smokers both before and after a single cigarette. They contrasted the effects against 22 e-cigarette users. Both were monitored within seven minutes of usage.

Heart function became worse and blood pressure rose in tobacco smokers. Those using the alternative experienced only minor elevations in blood pressure.

There are many who want much larger and longer studies before making any severe and absolute claims.

Nevertheless, e-cigarettes appear to help smokers with both the physiological and psychological dependency. The latter dependency is something many other alternatives do not address. The electronic cigarettes allow a user to emulate the smoking ritual without actual taking in the dangerous smoke.

“It’s not surprising they are less harmful than the real thing, he says. “The e-cigarette has the advantage of not having the thousands of other chemicals, besides nicotine, that a real cigarette has.” said American Heart Association spokesperson, Dr. Ryan Luepker of the University of Minnesota.

He added, "I don't think it's conclusive but there's no doubt if you expose someone to fewer bioactive chemical compounds there is going to be less effect on the heart," Luepker says. But they should only be used as a temporary bridge while quitting smoking.”
