  • Brisbane Airport Shifts Again on Pickups, Allowing Domestic Terminal Pickups reports Kingsford Smith Parking

(Transportation-News.com, November 08, 2012 ) Eagle Farm, Australia- Brisbane Domestic Airport is reversing course on new road rules and will allow passengers to be picked up by drivers in front of the domestic terminal.

The Brisbane Airport Corp. received 300 complaints after a decision in August to make separate drop-offs and pickups for drivers. The airport’s CEO announced the change.

“As of Nov. 6, people will once again be allowed to use the road in front to pick up passengers from what is known as the departures road,” chief executive Julieanne Alroe told the Brisbane Times. “We will need to change the relevant signs on the approach roads, and this will take a few weeks and we ask people to bear with us.”

Drivers who are picking up travelers are limited to two-minute waits along the departure road.

The airport was dismayed about criticism of the decision to open a new parking area for drivers to pick up travelers, Alroe said. Airport officials have extended the waiting time to 30 minutes from 20 minutes.

The departure area will have special zones where passengers can be picked up, and a new flight-information screen will be installed.

The airport is a destination for 35,000 vehicles a day.

Airport officials expect to make changes again in two years, including possibly setting aside a level off the two garages that recently were built, Alroe said.

She took issue with criticism over the price of short-term parking and insisted the airport has to make a return on its investment in building the multi-level garages.

“Our hourly rates, in fact many of our rates, at the airport are actually lower than the CBD rates,” Alroe said. She noted that fewer people were using private transport to get to the airport.

“We are certainly seeing shifts to public transport,” Alroe said. “The highest (most popular) way of getting to the airport is by taxi, which is why we prioritize the taxi road system.”

The airport will need to improve road and terminal access in the next few years, she said.
