A putative class action lawsuit in Florida alleges that the coating defect permits hot gases to corrode the exhaust passages, which in turn develop holes and can eventually lead to a loss of horsepower, engine failure and other problems. According to the suit, the alleged defect manifests only after 500 to 700 hours of usage, which for recreational users will typically occur after Yamaha’s three-year warranty has ended. The suit claims that Yamaha has failed to publicly acknowledge the alleged defect and failed to provide relief to purchasers, who as a result must spend thousands to repair or replace their motors.
The alleged defect is hidden in the motor’s aluminum exhaust component coatings, which are not readily viewable to users, the suit claims. The plaintiff in the suit alleges that he only learned of the corrosion from a mechanic, whom he visited after noting his engine was experiencing a loss of power. The plaintiff claims that he was given a nearly $7000 estimate for repairs and had no knowledge of the corrosion prior to the mechanic’s inspection.
