  • Shannons Releases Top 10 Most Memorable Movie Car Chases Infographic

(Transportation-News.com, August 05, 2013 ) Victoria, Australia -- A new infographic published by Shannons shows just how car chases aren’t done like they were used to. With raw power and incredible driving skill, car chases used to be most suspenseful scenes and jaw dropping moments of movies.

The most memorable car car chase of all was in the 1978 film The Driver, when Ryan O’Neal chased down two gangster to an empty warehouse. Switching on his headlights, he floors it and drives head on towards the gangsters’ 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, cause it to veer off, a victory for the 1973 C-10 Stepside.

In Bullitt, A 1968 Ford Mustang was going 180 km per hour in pursuit of a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T around the streets of San Francisco. McQueen stays with the Chargers until they come to an explosive end and he bashes them off the road and into a petrol station.

Fear is the Key comes in at number three on Shannons’ Top 10 list. At 171 km per hour, a stolen 1972 Ford Gran Torino driven by Barry Newman is being chased by police in a 1969 Pontiac Catalina. Newman hurtles along the banks of the Mississippi, losing the police cars along away.

The Blues Brothers were also lucky enough to get away from police. After 34 cars being written off, their chase in 1974 Dodge Monaco seems a little ridiculous, but it stands out as the Blues Brothers go through high speeds of 224 km per hour as they are pursued through a shopping mall before losing the 1977 Dodge Royal Monaco being driven by Police.

At number five, Vanishing Point is about a car delivery driver high on speed darts across the American Southwest in his 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T. Pursued by cops for the whole film, he crashes to a fiery death with a couple of bulldozers at a roadblock.

Ronin, starring Robert De Niro, Jean Reno and Skipp Suddith have several cars in this fast-paced film, including a 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9, 1990 Peugeot 605, 1998 Audi S8 D2 and a 1995 Citroen XM. A pair of exciting car chases ensues in the movie, where De Niro blos the Peugeot up with a bazooka and the Audi hurls through narrow streets to cut off the Citroen.

In White Lightning, Burt Reynolds seems to purposefully speed to get chased in his 1971 Ford Custom 500 by a police car of the same make and model year. He outmaneuvers the police through a timber yard and launches his car onto a moving river barge to get away.

Number Eight sees classic Gone in 60 Seconds, a 1974 film that features 93 different cars being written off. During one of the chases, a stolen Mustang is driven throug the parks, sidewalks and highways, eventually ending up at a previous crash scene, which the car jumps over, losing the police. This scene is also the longest car scene in history.

Freebie and the Bean features Alan Arkin and James Caan as two police officers in a 1972 Ford Custom 500 in pursuit of a Plymouth Fury through the streets of San Francisco, causing havoc and eventually end up crashing from a freeway into an apartment block, allowing the Plymouth to get away.

Last but not least, The high speed chase of the 1973 Buick Riviera and the 1951 Mercury Coupe in Thunderbolt and Lightfoot starring Clint Eastwood, features speeds of over 200 km per hour After being fired from the Mercury, Jeff Bridges puts pedal to the metal and leads his pursuers to follow him off road where they crash, and the Buick gets away.
