(Transportation-News.com, August 12, 2013 ) Calgary,Canada -- The Chattanooga factory for Volkswagen, as well as the Passat factory built in the area, are considered a corporate success story for the brand and local economic story for the Tennessee area.
According to a study handled by Volkswagen Chattanooga, the economic impact is in the ballpark of $643 million, while creating 12,400 full-time jobs within the region. The facility is also certified according to ISO 14001 for its environmental management system and according to ISO 50001 for its energy management system.
CEO and Chairman of the Chattanooga plant stated that his 'four pillars' approach to the Center for Automotive Research Management project will focus on people, plants, products, and parts.
"I'm very proud of what we've accomplished in Chattanooga, I'm proud of this car, and I'm proud of our employees," Fischer said. "Building a brand new car in a new facility with all new employees was a challenge, but the Chattanooga plant is a success story and we've only written the first chapter," Fischer said.
The Chattanooga plant builds the sedan, which offers a four-engine option. From the 1.8 L TSI to the 2.0 L TDI Clean Diesel. Fischer stated that Passat was designed with North American markets in mind. He stated that the highest quality product proves that.
The Chattanooga plant is the world's first factory to be LEED platinum-certified by the US Green Building Council, and consists of body shop, paint shop, assembly, and supplier park.
Over 84% of all materials and parts are North American made, and Fischer stated that Volkswagen has a close partnership with the suppliers to truck parts.
Most important to the company is the facility employees that measure 2,500 in total. Over 37 nationalities are represented within the team, and those employed range in education level as well. The team is something of a micro-melting pot that expresses the very nature of North America.
"When Volkswagen came to Chattanooga, it was a promise between the company and the community," Fischer said. "Since the announcement five years ago, that promise has built over 250,000 cars and employed over 2,500 people."
