(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 28, 2010 ) MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Unusually bad weather across the country is causing havoc among some of the nation's largest airlines.
Six U.S. carriers canceled at least 3,299 flights yesterday, primarily in Philadelphia and the New York area, where all the major airports were closed. ThatÂ’s in addition to 3,334 flights grounded Dec. 26 by snowfall of as much as 20 inches (51 centimeters) and winds gusting to 30 mph.
Many concerned travelers have been left stranded at airports with few alternatives. Extreme Stock Picks, an online investor newsletter service, says investors should be equally concerned.
Among the airlines impacted include, US Airways Group, Inc. (Public, NYSE:LCC), Delta Air Lines, Inc. (Public, NYSE:DAL), Continental Airlines, Inc. (Public, NYSE:CAL) and Southwest Airlines Co. (Public, NYSE:LUV).
Overall, the airlines have canceled more than 6,000 flights amid the winter storm. What's this mean for passengers? Most definitely lengthy waits to rebook their trips as carriers move aircraft and search for seats on crowded planes.
“It’s a mess,” says one former airline marketing executive. “It takes a long time for this to sort out. With every day of cancellations, the problem just compounds itself.”
The bad weather on the east coast even postponed the Eagles football game to Tuesday night from Sunday night. It will be the National Football League's first Tuesday night game since the 1940s.
