  • Boston Woman Caught Smuggling Cocaine In Dirty Diapers

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 05, 2011 ) Boston, MA -- An East Boston woman is being held on $250,000 bail for allegations that she smuggled nearly 12 pounds of cocaine into the U.S. in a dirty diaper bag. Her attorney says she was merely a hapless mule who feared for her life.

"People like Miss Morla-Romas are perfect targets for drug traffickers. She's a mule. They preyed on her and she acted," said Rochelle Burgos, who is defending Morla-Ramos in East Boston District Court.

Police arrested Karen Morla-Ramos, 22, at Logan International Airport on charges of cocaine trafficking. She had been traveling on a JetBlue flight from the Dominican Republic.

The police report indicates that 1,040 grams of cocaine were discovered during a search of Morla-Romas at the airport. The report states that Morla-Romas was aware she was carrying the drugs, and admitted to being paid $800 for doing so.

The police report also contains information that Morla-Romas was asked to smuggle the drugs by swallowing them, but she was unable to do so. Instead, a plan was devised to smuggle the coke inside used baby diapers. Apparently, the idea was that authorities would not want to thoroughly search the dirty diapers.

Morla-Romas, who is to appear again in court on April 21, told the police that, "She owed a man (named Herman) money in the Dominican Republic ... (He) promised her money in return for her transporting drugs,” and that she was afraid of what would happen to her if she refused.
