  • Military-Auto-Loans.com: Gas Costs Military $400 A Gallon In Afghanistan

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 13, 2011 ) Asheville, NC -- Here in the States drivers carp about gas staying around $4 a gallon. Make no mistake, that can add up to a more than fair chunk of the average paycheck, but imagine if every gallon had to be airlifted to the pump. That is what the Pentagon faces each day and is the major reason that some gallons of gas in Afghanistan cost $400.

Troops on remote military bases need fuel, undoubtedly, but to send that fuel overland is risky. Risks of an attack and losing all of the fuel outweigh the costs of dropping the fuel by parachute. By the time the costs of fueling the airplane, parachutes, and other necessary supplies are added up, the costs are astronomical. In 2005, the military air dropped around 4 million pounds of cargo, so far in 2011, it has dropped over 90 million pounds.

Though troop levels are scheduled to slowly dwindle starting in 2012, the amount of cargo dropped is expected to increase through 2014. Until then, the military expects that $400 a gallon is going to be cheap.
