The main issue is that some auto repair shops will do the bidding of an insurance company and accept whatever payment the company offers. Other repair shops owners argue that they should be able to set their rates without interference from the insurers.
Many repair shops say that if they donÂ’t charge fair prices (according to insurance companies), they lose business, sometimes to shops that use substandard parts. Insurers say that, since they deal with thousands of vehicle repairs each year, they simply know who does the best work for the lowest cost.
The Iowa legislature heard three bills about auto insurance and repair prices in 2011, but none passed. They are going to be introduced again in 2012. In Massachusetts, auto body shops are backing the Auto Body Labor Rate Bill. If passed, the bill would establish a commission to set floors on repair. Opponents in the insurance industry say they must set price standards to keep a lid on costs and premiums. The debate will continue to rage on until lawmakers step in and probably even afterward.
