(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 13, 2011 ) Wilmington, NC -- A study recently released by the federal government shows that 1 in every 20 drivers is using a cellphone at any given moment, and another 1 in 100 are texting while they drive. That translates into 13.5 million drivers using a mobile device every moment of the peak daytime driving hours.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study indicates that text messaging while driving is growing, despite recently enacted laws and a tidal wave of publicity about tragedies caused by distracted drivers. The NHTSA said that there is evidence that one-tenth of all roadway fatalities last year (3,092 deaths) involved distracted drivers. The agency believes that the actual number may be far higher. That belief has arisen because determining distracted driving as the cause of a traffic fatality is difficult since there are rarely any witnesses and the distracted driver may be dead.
As of May 2011, eight states, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands ban driving while using a hand-held cell phone. Thirty-two states, the District of Columbia, and Guam ban texting while driving. Despite these laws being in place, they are rarely enforced.
