  • BHPHAZ: Safety Panel Says Ban All Use of Internet Devices Behind Wheel

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 11, 2012 ) A safety panel from the National Transportation Safety Board asked for a ban on all use of cell phones and internet devices by drivers last month. Including hands off technologies and many types of navigation devices, this called-for ban goes much further than any ban currently in place anywhere in the U.S.

Opponents to such legislation point to the fact that at the while cell phone use by drivers has drastically increased, road deaths have dropped to their lowest point in more than 60 years.

The NTSB recommendation would impact nearly all drivers and all automakers since the ban would include the prohibiting of many Bluetooth connected devices and in-dash systems that are currently being integrated into the vehicles themselves.

While choosing not to talk about drivers changing radio stations or holding cups of coffee, NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman said about connected drivers, “It is past time to face the facts that no one can drive safely when driving is not their focus. It's time to curb the carnage on our roads from distraction-related accidents." Hersman did not address the dangers caused by drivers who like to talk with passengers within their cars.

Lovers of freedom across the nation can find comfort in the fact that the NTSB cannot create its own safety rules, and that the federal government does not enact laws of the road, instead leaving it up to individual states to police their streets and highways.
