  • Weather Unlikely as Cause of Plane Crash Near Amsterdam Airport

    (EMAILWIRE.COM, February 26, 2009 ) State College, Pa. -- AccuWeather.com reports a Turkish Airlines plane carrying about 130 passengers and seven crew members missed the runway and crashed on landing at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, breaking into three pieces.

    As of press time, nine people were killed and dozens about 50 were injured, although varies sources and media outlets are reporting conflicting amounts.

    The Boeing 737-800 crashed into a field near the furthest runway from the terminals at Schiphol, which is about 20 km (about 12.5 miles) from the center of the city and is the fourth largest largest passenger airport in Europe.

    The weather conditions at the airport near the time of the crash was cloudy with slight drizzle. The temperature was around 5 degrees (C), with a 15 kph SW wind.
