(Transportation-News.com, October 04, 2012 ) Tweeds Head South, NSW -- According to a report by Invest in Australia, domestic tourism is booming in Australia, with overnight trips taken by domestic tourists increasing by six per cent to 75.1 million for the year ending June 2012.
Martin Ferguson, Minister for Tourism, was quoted as saying, “Visitor nights and overnight trips are up for all states and territories, with Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory all experiencing growth of more than nine per cent for nights and trips,”
Ferguson was also quoted as saying, “These figures confirm the trend of recovery in domestic tourism post GFC with nights and expenditure increasing since mid-2011, particularly in visiting friends and relatives and business travel. Domestic tourism is the backbone of the industry accounting for three quarters of the $35 billion tourism contributes to Australia’s GDP. It is very encouraging to see Australians recognising the immense travel opportunities that exist in their own backyard and supporting Australian businesses.”
According to the same report, there was also a big increase in free caravan and camping sites for overnight trips, which showed a reported 16 percent increase from the previous year.
“While it is exciting to hear such encouraging domestic travel news, we’re also not surprised,” said the owner of South Tweed Caravans, a retailer of new and used caravans for sale in Brisbane. “Domestic travelling and caravanning in particular, is so important to the Australian way of life, so it’s not shocking that it is experiencing a big uptick.”

“Domestic travel, like Minister Ferguson said, is the backbone of the Australian economy, so it’s always good to hear that it’s doing well, because it’s really an indicator of how the economy as a whole is doing,” said the owner of South Tweed Caravans. “As a retailer of the best caravans on the Gold Coast, we’re always happy to see Australians exploring and travelling, and a healthy travel industry means good things for the entire country, in our opinion.”
According to the same survey, the majority of domestic travellers in Australia used private vehicles for their overnight trips, and this form of travel saw an increase of 8 percent from the previous year.
“These are extremely positive results and show the importance of the domestic traveller market to Australia’s overall tourism industry,” said Minister Ferguson.
