  • Twitter Allows Search Engine Indexing reports SmartRank.co.uk

(Transportation-News.com, October 05, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Search engines can now crawl more sites thanks to Twitter’s recent update of its robots.txt. Google, Bing, Yandex, and other sites will now have access to the search results via Twitter pages.

The Sociable was first to note the modification. The text now reads:
    Allow: /search
    Disallow: /search/users
    Disallow: /search/*/grid
    Disallow: /*?
    Disallow /*/with_friends

User search is still disallowed; however, search results pages will show up in Google’s index. To give an example, for a search on the Olympics becomes indexed. Thus, the information will show up in Google results to anyone seeking information on the event.

Searches for keywords could direct searchers to Twitter’s internal search for the term. Searchers would see Google’s ads on the search results page, but after clicking on Twitter result, they would head to the user’s page, where there are no ads.

Bing already utilizes real-time tweets in their results, called ‘firehose access’. Google had such access until the relationship between the companies went sour.

The Twitter and Google relationship is still dicey since their firehose deal ended in 2011. In
October, CEO Dick Costolo and John Battelle spoke at the Web 2.0 Summit, and hinted the problem between an agreement between companies was a non-monetary one.

Many speculate that the creation of Google+ was at least part of the reason the relationship went south. However, Costolo said the two were competing in different arenas.

In January of 2012, Twitter responded to Google’s announcement of Google Plus Your World, saying, “Twitter has emerged as a vital source of this real-time information. As we've seen time again, news breaks first on Twitter. As a result, Twitter accounts and Tweets are often the most relevant (search) results. We're concerned that, as a result of Google's changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone. We think that's bad for people, publishers, news organizations and Twitter users."

The statement prompted Google to respond on their Plus page, stating. “We are a bit surprised by Twitter's comments about Search plus Your World, because they chose not to renew their agreement with us last summer, and since then we have observed their rel=nofollow instructions.”

Google can now crawl and index Twitter’s searches. The questions remains, will they?
The current change seems to be an attempt to make up the misstep caused by the cooling of the companies’ relationship. Twitter missed quite an opportunity, as searchers were unable to see their ads. This step seems to be in order to rectify this situation.

Since twitter does not utilize ads on their sidebars, search engine crawl and index will hopefully draw users. Still, the move does not make them money.
