  • Chicago unveils plan for free park WI-FI reports WiFiFoundation.org

(Transportation-News.com, October 17, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emmanuel released a plan to put Chicago on the WI-FI map. The plan ambitiously dubbed the Chicago Broadband Challenge, began it’s citywide tour by opening a free WI-FI hot spot for visitors, in Millennium Park this Monday.

Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s plan is to convert Chicago into one of the most interconnected cities in the country. The plan is expected to have major positive effects for the city and residents as well. In a statement Emmanuel said, "The establishment of a world-class broadband network in Chicago will create thousands of jobs and dramatically improve educational opportunities, economic development, health care services, and general quality of life throughout the city."

The plan is also being geared to address the individual company and resident needs, by encouraging feedback on its website. This is expected to be a revolutionary internet move, as the WI-FI will be available at one hundred times faster than regular cable modems. This plan has been seen before in Kansas City, MO., when Google attempted and executed a similar plan.

Emmanuel is focusing the WI-FI plan to function around what he calls “innovation zones”, which consist of commercial and industrial zones. He also makes it a note to express the need for faster internet in the city’s underprivileged areas.

It is untold how much the build will cost, but Google and Verizon Communications are making investments. Verizon spends an approximate 23 billion to connect homes to their service, which runs at about $70 a month for consumers.
