(Transportation-News.com, October 17, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- In its race for internet preeminence, Russia’s major search engine, Yandex, launched it’s own web browser on Monday. The software was made available to users at 1300 GMT. Yandex followed the steps of its American rival Google, in creating a web browser after dominating the scene as a search engine.
The browser was backed by Arkandy Volozh, C.E.O. of Yandex, in his statement this week; “The cloud-based browser integrates the best of our products and services and is open to other web developers.”
Volozh went on to say, “It considerably expands the browsing territory for those who speak only one language.”
One of users’ main concerns remains the issue of security. As far as security, Yandex informed the public that its new browser, features anti-virus technology designed by the Russian based security company, Kaspersky Lab. Among its other highlighted features was its simple interfacing. The interface was built around the Webkit platform and Google’s Chromium code.
Russia’s Yandex resembles Google in that it offers other products and services, in addition to providing it’s search engine and browser. Both offer email, web storage, blogging services, as well as vehicular traffic rerouting software.
The two have been in a bitter quarrel for years that was intensified when Yandex’s CEO publicly accused Google of monopolizing the industry, earlier in the year. Volozh defended his claims on Monday, by stating “Two years ago… everyone started eating everyone else. Google started advancing its Chrome and actively pushing out competitors from it.”
Currently, Yandex holds 60% of Russian searches, while Google claims only a quarter. The Russian company ranks in fifth, in the largest search engine list; raking in over 25 million visits on a daily basis.
The browser’s logo did not go unnoticed during its launch, being crudely nicknamed “The Thong”, in response to its design. It features a red Y amidst a white sphere. Volozh is confident in their new browser. He simply stated, “If the product is good, then our share will grow”.
