  • New Garden Project Generates micro-climate for added comfort to area reports SpaceDesigns.com.au

(Transportation-News.com, October 17, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- The latest landscaping project by the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) proves that landscaping is about much more than aesthetics.

The SPA recently designed the new building of the ministry of external affairs (MEA), Jawaharlal Nehru Bhavan. The landscaping controls the location’s humidity and temperature for the comfort of diplomats who frequently visit the MEA.

"The optimum temperature is about 26 to 28 degrees with around 50% humidity,” said SPA professor of landscape architecture Surender Suneja. But in Delhi, the temperature is extreme in summer and winter. To minimize the heat, we have made terrace gardens covering the exposed terrace of the building, we have made stretches of vertical gardens in the parking area so that its soothing for people who are standing outside in the sun.”

In addition to standard laws and shrubs, Suneja incorporated Plumeria Alba, a flowering tree also known as Frangipani in Hindi, which creates a fragrant atmosphere. "I have also used albedos in the garden so that the heat is reflected and the surface is cool. Four years ago, the then foreign secretary had advised me to develop a project like this. We have finally managed to complete the project and are seeing quite a difference in the microclimate," added Suneja.

The result, he said, is a 2-degree drop in temperature at the MEA garden.

Suneja said private builders fail to use correct landscaping methods. "There is a lot that private builders can do in Delhi. They can use techniques that will reduce heat-stress in the city. But they are always more concerned about beautification and use exotic varieties."

A recent study by Malaysia’s University of Kebangsaan Department of Architecture indicates that landscaping methods such as green roofs and facades can improve water quality and create wildlife habitat while reducing sound reflection and urban heat-island effects.
