  • New iPhone contains chips from Qualcomm, Skyworks and Ava reports MyiBroke.com

(Transportation-News.com, October 17, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- The repair firm iFixit recently disassembled an Apple iPhone 5 to discover the latest model of the popular smartphone features chips from Qualcomm, Inc., Avago Technologies Ltd. and Skyworks Solutions, Inc.

The new version of the iPhone has a larger screen (4 inches) and is much lighter and slimmer than its predecessors.

In the first 24 hours it took online pre-orders, Apple booked more than 2 million requests for the device, underscoring investors’ contention that the Cupertino, Calif. company will continue growing by leaps and bounds.

Other companies contributing parts to the new iPhone include DRAM and flash memory chipmaker SK Hynix, and radio-frequency chipmaker Triquint Semiconductor, Inc., according to iFixit.

It also included an audio chip made by Cirrus Logic, Inc., a gyroscope to track the phone’s orientation used by STMicroelectronics and controller chips from PMC-Sierra, Inc., and Broadcom Corp.

News of Apple choosing or dropping a supplier for one of its products can send stock prices swinging. Shares in Audience, Inc. plunged 63% recently when Apple said it would no longer employ the company’s noise filtering technology.

Apple does not reveal which companies manufacture the components in its devices.

That is why iFixit co-founder Luke Soules recently lined up at a local store to purchase one of the first iPhone 5s, and then guzzled Red Bull energy drinks all night while dismantling the device to find out what went into making it.

In announcing which components are included in the new iPhone, Soules entered territory chip makers fear to tread for fear of losing current business or future opportunities with Apple.

Teardowns of Apple products offer investors valuable insights into which suppliers Apple chooses.

As for what new iPhone components can do for the consumer, the Qualcomm chip allows the device to support faster 4G network, while a new A6 processor runs twice as fast as the previous generation’s.

Although Soules did not identify them in the recent teardown, many suspect Sharp Corp, LG Display Co. Ltd. and Japan Display, Inc. supply Apple with display panels for the iPhone.

Apple has sold more than 243 million iPhones since 2007.
