  • Study finds Car Rental Prices Double with Common Extras reports Rent A CarIn

(Transportation-News.com, November 18, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Family vacations with a hired car can get expensive fast, a new piece of research conducted by Post Office Travel Money has found. Seven-of-ten destinations sampled showed that car rental prices could more than double, after account for extras, when compared to a basic one week rental.

The Post Office Travel Money study found that 66% of families that hired a car while traveling abroad indeed did pay for extras above-and-beyond basics rental charges. The research concluded that the two most common ‘extras’ purchased were the ability to add a second driver and excess waiver insurance, or EWI.

The study also found that the most affordable car rentals on the planet were available in Alicane, Spain, at around £94 for a basic hire, edging out the traditionally driver-friendly United States by about £30. When extras were added, however, the steering wheel quickly turned: with EWI and and an extra driver, the US became the cheapest car hire service running, at £177, while Alicante rentals climbed to above £215. The difference is partially accounted-for by the fact that EWI is included without charge in US car rentals.

A trip in Rome or Pisa, the most expensive destination polled, rocketed from £97 for a basic hire to £287 with EWI and an additional driver. According the to the study, the only European destinations where prices did not double after extras were added were Greece and France.

While frugal travelers might try to avoid some of these extras to keep costs down, getting into an accident without EWI could cost some serious money. Average excess payable costs were lowest in Corfu, £555, found an average across much of Spain at £620 and peaked in Faro, Portugal, at £950.

The Head of Travel Money, Andrew Brown, said that many holiday planners are tempted to advertise low basic costs to get customers through the door, but that actual costs, included EWI can be investigated simply by calling the rental agency directly.
