  • Drop in EU Car Insurance Rates Temporary reports CarInsurance90

(Transportation-News.com, November 21, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Despite a recent 13.6% drop in car insurance rates for young drivers, rates are expected to increase significantly, at least for women, next month.

Those predicting the hike chalk it up to next month’s EU gender ruling.

The insurance comparison website Confused.com urges 17-to-20-year-old drivers to jump on today’s rates.

At the moment, average comprehensive car insurance prices are £757, compared to £843 at the same time last year. That’s a difference of £87, or 10.3%.

Rates fell for all age groups and both genders, particularly young female drivers. However, young female drivers will pay as much as 24% more after the EU gender law goes into effect Dec. 21.

Beginning that day, auto insurers will not be allowed to offer different rates to each gender. That means women will no longer benefit from their tendency, backed by statistics, of being safer drivers in general.

Confused.com Editor Sharon Flaherty said, “at the moment women pay less than men and statistically. This is because on average they are less of a risk on the roads than young male drivers.

"However the bad news is that on Dec. 21 the law change will mean that men and women have to be judged as exactly the same on the roads.

"Women will effectively be charged more because statistically they will no longer be allowed to be rated as safer on the roads."

Experts predict women ages 26 to 30 will pay an 18% increase, while those ages 31 to 35 will pay 10% more, and women ages 36 to 40 will pay 3% more. Those 41 to 45 years old will likely pay 1% more for future auto insurance policies.

Generally, the average cost for married people is less than that for unmarried people. For example, a male driver who is married pays £432, compared to £907 if he were unmarried. Married women currently pay £418.
