(Transportation-News.com, November 21, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The city of Mysore, India, is prepared to receive as much as 60 tons of solid waste materials at nine Zero Waste Management locations set up throughout the city beginning on Wednesday.
The plan, according to the minister in charge of the Mysore district, S.A. Ramdas, is to have five permanent Zero Waste Management site set up and to prepare four additional temporary locations to take in at least 5 tons of waste each.
The action is being taken as a result of the buildup of garbage at the Vidyaranyapuram Sewage Farm. The farm poses a health hazard to area residents in nearby J.P. Nagar, Vishveshwara Nagar and Vidyaranyapuram, where residents filed complaints about the stench emanating from the garbage pile.
During a recent inspection of the Vidyaranyapuram Sewage Farm by Ramdas, Mysore City Corporation Commissioner M.R. Ravi, and other officials, the minister criticized the operators of the plant for their lack of effort to control the smell from the rotting waste material.
Residents had been complaining about the stench emanating from the plant for more than two weeks, including reports that animal waste was being dumped there illegally.
“There is a landfill yard for dumping animal waste. But the trucks transporting solid waste dumped animal waste there,” Ramdas said. He added that a notice had been issued to the Mysore City Corporation by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board as a result of the complaints.
Ramdas asked the Mysore City Corporation to identify any violators dumping animal waste at the waste plant so that their dumping privileges could be suspended pending an investigation and possible criminal charges could be filed.
Zero waste management sites have been set up in Kesare, J.P. Nagar, Bannimantap, Kumbarhalli and other places in order to take in at least 60 tons of solid waste material.
Ramdas added that solid waste dumping at the Sewage Farm was being limited to about five acres so as to prevent open exposure of waste. The remaining 2.5 acres would be capped soon as well. Chemical spraying to reduce the smell is also been requested.
Ramdas plans to visit the plant again on November 19 to review the situation and determine whether the plant was operating under the stipulated guidelines.
