(Transportation-News.com, December 12, 2012 ) County Clare, Ireland -- The Irish government has decided to separate Shannon Airport from the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), clearing the way for the airport to add 850 new jobs in the near future.
The airport, located in Shannon in Ireland's Clare County, is one of Irelands three primary airports. By granting independence to Shannon Airport, it will now be able to merge with the restructured Shannon Development and become a public-owned commercial enterprise sometime during 2013.
As a result, two Shannon-based companies, will take part in the construction of the International aviation services center, which will initially create 850 jobs.
By becoming independent, Shannon Airport and Shannon Development could create up to 3,500 new jobs in the next five years, according to a report from Aviation Business Development Task Force. The task force is a government-appointed oversight group, not including construction jobs.
In the report, the task force predicted that Shannon Airport could attract up to 1 million more passengers annually within five years. Currently, the airport averages around 1.5 million passengers per year.
The Shannon Development reorganization is expected to be implemented by July of 2013 as the Development and airport merge to form a new entity.
The task force's report said Shannon Airport potentially could attract new airline services through a competitive and flexible tariff structure.
The task force, headed by Bord Gáis chairman Rose Hynes, says that Shannon Airport has received "specific commitments" from two existing companies in Shannon to increase employment contingent on the airport's separation from the DAA.
Shannon Airport currently has 230 employees, 1,600 are employed in related aviation businesses in conjunction with the airport.
The hope for the international aviation services center is to attract new industries "that don't currently exist in Europe, such as aircraft refitting and aircraft recycling," according to Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar. He discussed the plans for the airport at a Shannon Chamber of Commerce meeting back in March.
