  • Need for Truck Drivers Rising in United States reports Advanced Heavy Vehicles

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 12, 2012 ) VIC, Australia -- The United States trucking industry estimates that there will be more than 330,000 new truck driving jobs created by 2020. The industryÂ’s experts predict that there will be a shortage of nearly 240,000 drivers.

According to a report by the Dayton Daily News, although truck driving is one of the fastest-growing job sectors nationwide, filling those positions has been difficult for trucking firms.

Experts predict that a shortage of almost 240,000 could occur in the next 10 years. They explain it is because of a lack of qualified drivers, retirements retirements of current drivers, recent regulations, industry growth, and competition from other sources.

In order to attract new drivers and retain the ones they currently have, trucking firms have resorted to offering pay incentives and creating working conditions; however, many trucking jobs can be a hard sell to people who are used to working a 9-to-5 job and being home at night and on the weekends.

"Many of our members say they've got trucks, they've got freight, but they've got no drivers," said David Bartosic, spokesman with the Ohio Trucking Association.

Employment opportunities for drivers of tractor-trailer trucks and heavy-duty trucks are expected to grow to 1.93 million jobs from 1.6 million in the period between 2010 and 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. As a result, trucking is expected to create more jobs that registered nursing, retail sales, home health aides, personal care aides, and office workers.

However, some trucking groups say that there is not a truck driver shortage. Instead, poor working conditions and low pay have led to a high driver turnover rate.

Traditionally, truck drivers work long hours on a job that is often physically demanding and result in the driver being away from home for long periods of time. But some trucking firms are trying to change that perspective.

"The job's a lot more regional than it used to be, and it's a lot more driver friendly because they used to just throw you the keys and you'd go to work," said Donald Banks, training manager of the Ohio Business College Truck Driving Academy in Madison Township in Ohio.

"Now we are a regulated industry, and drivers get home more often than they did."
