  • Designated Driver Company Looks to Get Tipsy Drivers Home Safe reports Secur-ffeur

(Transportation-News.com, January 16, 2013 ) London, U.K -- Over the Limit Designated Drivers is a company run by Mike Grove and Doug Riddick, which aims to help individuals get home after they are a bit over legal intoxication levels. The company is a wonderful and long overdue proper business model, that hopes to both be profitable while truly giving something back to the community, by way of true and direct safety impact.

The designated driver service will take anyone home in their own car, and operates within the Waterloo Region, Guelph and the surrounding area.

“At the end of the day, the main reason that people give for drinking and driving is that they want their car at home, because they have to be somewhere the next day,” Grove says.

Over the Limit Designated Drivers is not a taxi service, and they make sure to stress that fact. They do not show up unless your car is present, and at the ready to be driven by the employee.

Two individuals will pick up the vehicle. One will drive the car of the customer to drive you home. The other follows in his car. When you are home safely, you pay the designated driver, and you are given your keys. That way, customers wake up at home, safe, and with no need to walk into town to pick up his/her car.

“It’s more like having your personal chauffeur service for half an hour,” Riddick says. “It’s another option when people don’t want to call a cab.”

The car is driven under the customers personal insurance, just as any other designated driver would be.

The payment is $13.20 for the first kilometer, and $2 per kilometer after that. “At the end of the ride, it typically works out to about $5 more than a taxi cab ride,” Riddick says.

Grove and Riddick live in London and work and had previously worked at the Ford plant in St. Thomas before it closed. The two men put their severance pay into the small business and have not looked back.

“Oktoberfest (2011) was our coming out party,” Riddick says. “We were at the fest halls promoting it and telling people about it.”

The company currently has 13 cars on the road on a regular basis. The owners are in the process of bringing more drivers into the fold.
