(Transportation-News.com, February 24, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Five cars were reported stolen from homes in the Sheffield suburb in a single night, which has prompted authorities to warn individuals to keep their car keys hidden in their homes.
Two teenagers have been taken into custody and charged with the break-ins, all of which occurred in Walkley within a few hours.
Most of the robberies involved the offenders using a stick/hook to steal car keys through homeowners' letterboxes. Detective Sgt. Matthew Mellor stated: “Occasionally we see a spate of crimes like this, where car keys are stolen through letterboxes or cat flaps. We would urge all car owners to hide their car keys at night, and keep them well away from doors and windows.”
The initial incident was reported at 4 a.m. On Monday, when a car and electrical items were taken from by the suspects, who got into the house via a rear patio door.
Half an hour later, the police were called in to report of two more burglaries nearby. The cars had been stolen from the houses via the aforementioned stick technique, and one car was crashed after it had been stolen.
Nearing 7 a.m., the police were called to another burglary, this time involving a laptop that was stolen.
At 7:15 a.m., another burglary was reported, in which the thief used a similar method to lift car keys.
The South Yorkshire Police urged residents to lock up their doors and windows, upgrade their locks, and install burglar alarms, as well as leave strategic lights on when they are out of the house. Authorities also urged common sense on securing valuables and placing car keys out of sight and in areas not easily accessible to would-be thieves.
Any suspicious activity can be reported by residents to the authorities.
