(Transportation-News.com, February 24, 2013 ) San Francisco,CA -- The U.K. Had debuted its new version of the Google's driverless, which could rival the current technology and surpass the search engine giant is handled properly, according to some.
Scientists from Oxford University have recently developed a smart car system that can now cope in adverse weather conditions, including snow and rain. That is something that the Google car has not been able to handle as of yet, report The Guardian. The publication noted that the system, which works somewhat like a plugin, can be fitted to vehicles for £5,000; However, researchers want to bring down the price to £100 in the near future.
The team is led by Professor Paul Newman, and has developed over two years on the Nissan Leaf electric car. The team has tested it on private roads to find out whether the car is able to detect and adapt changing conditions. Such changes include weather and hazards. So far, the researchers have noted that the car is capable of stopping automatically for pedestrians, as well as “alert” the driver when it is ready to take over. Such capability is useful for items like traffic jams.
The Oxford system can be utilized when driving as fast as 40 miles-per-hour, according to the team.
The system uses a 3D scanning technology in order to build a virtual map for its surroundings, rather than rely solely on te GPS. The addition is especially helpful in urban areas that contain a large assortment of objects shorter blocks that can cause satellite signals to become confused.
Rather than being a fully autonomous alternative to driving, the system developed by Oxford is a more advanced driver assistance program (ADA), which can take over for the driver in specific situation.
Newman is quick to emphasize, however, that: “It’s not total autonomy for the car. It knows when things are good, and when the risks are reasonable, and then it will offer to take over.”
