  • Over Half-Million Beemers May Be Recalled reports GMP Transport

    (Transportation-News.com, February 24, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Bayerische Motoren Werke AG could be the world's most reputable company, according to Forbes when it came out with its list last June. However, the popular MBW brand of North America LLC will nonetheless be recalling over a half-million Beemers for different safety reasons coming in the next week.

    According to a U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recalls are due to a situation with the braking system. A second recall has to do with an electrical malfunction in the cars. The former is anticipated to begin quickly, starting within the month, while the latter is expected be start officially next month.

    The brake-related recall could potentially cause an effect that will be felt by over 30,265 owners. In that case, the MBW brand will be forced to recall all the model 2007-2010 X5 SAV vehicles that are equipped with eight-cylinder engined that had been manufactured between 2006 and March of 2010.

    "The brake vacuum pump may leak a small amount of lubricating oil into the hose. The contamination could result in a loss of power assist braking," NHTSA said. "The loss of power assist in braking could increase stopping distance and lead to a vehicle crash."

    The company will be notifying owners regarding the recall, and dealers will be replacing each brake vacuum line with a new system that contains a check value. Such additions will be made free of charge.

    The electronic-centered recall may be affecting nearly 505,000 vehicles in all. Cars spanning from the six different models and spanning the years 2007-2012 may be affected.

    "The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade … Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle," NHTSA said. "If there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash."

    BMW will notify owners regarding the recall and the dealers will replace each positive battery cable connector, securing it with improved method, with no charge added.
