  • JD Power and Assoc. Claim Cars More Reliable than Ever reports Keyes Lexus

(Transportation-News.com, February 26, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Nowadays, if there is one thing that seems to be more dependable than it ever was before, it is the car. Vehicles are more dependable than ever, according to JD Power and Associates.

The consulting company has released its latest study that measured the problems experienced in the last year by owners of cars that were released in 2010. The report noted that the list of problems fell to 5% , and thus to the lowest level since the company began to collect data in 1989.

Lexus, Porsche, Lincoln, and Toyota owners reported the fewest problem, while Jeep and Mitsubishi owners has the most, along with Dodge and Land Rover.

Owners reported an average of 126 problems per 100 vehicles in the 2010 model, which is down from 132 in last year's survey. A problem can be incident randing from dashboard electrical glitches to engine failure.

For the first time, cars that are new or redesigned for 2010 performed better than those that were unchanged in the 2009 model year. Owners of new models experienced only 116 per 100 vehicles, as compared to the 133 for models that were not new in 2010.

"The rapid improvement in fundamental vehicle dependability each year is more than offsetting any initial glitches that all-new or redesigned models may have," said David Sargent, who leads J.D. Power's global automotive operations.

U.S.-based brands have continued to row the gap in dependability with their foreign competitors. This year, the gap fell within 10 problems per 100 vehicles. This year's study noted that the Prius, from Toyota, was the most reliable small call, while the Sonata from Hyundai was the most reliable mid size. The Toyota RAV4 had the highest rank for the small SUV class, while the Chevy Tahoe was most reliable for the larger SUV class. The RX from Lexus was best at the midsize SUV level, with 57 problem per 100.

Excessive wind noise was the number-one problem, noted Raffi Festekjian, who stands as director of global automotive research operations. Noisy brakes came in second, while chipping and fading paint was third, according to Festekjian.
