  • Major US Automakers See First-Quarter Numbers Rise

(Transportation-News.com, May 09, 2013 ) Orlando, FL -- Detroit is known for being a boom-and-bust region due to its dependence on the vehicular market. Now, with a fresh stock of showroom demand and newer cars needing to be developed, including fuel-efficient trucks, the United States automakers are now gaining some ground they had lost to their Asian competitors in the past.

“No matter what the economy does, no matter what fuel prices are, I’ve got a car for all seasons,” said Chuck Eddy, a Chrysler dealer in Youngstown, Ohio, who is seeing sales boom for Dodge Dart compact cars and Ram 1500 pickups. “I didn’t have that in ’09.”

The General Motors Company, as well as Ford Motor and Chrysler Group, have now exceeded their own sales forecasts over the last year, and have led the industry to its best Month-of-April totals since 2007.

There was an 18% rise in Ford Sales over the 30-day period, while both Chrysler and GM were able to boast a 11% increase. Those numbers beat forecasts that expected 17%, 10% and 10% respectively for the companies.

Sales were able to have such success across the board for the U.S. Automotive production industry, as Ford had saw its Fusion family car sales assist in its overall positive numbers. The sale rose 24% and topped the Nissan Motor company's Altima, while GM's Cadillac ATS was able to drive a 34% increase for its luxury car line. The Ram 1500 pickup gave Chrysler a boost with a 49% increase.

“Detroit is arguably much more competitive than they have been, from the broad spectrum of their lineup, in a decade or more,” said Jeff Schuster, an analyst with researcher LMC Automotive. “Right now, Detroit has the momentum.”

The main Detroit movers and shakers saw the market share rise just over 46% over the start of 2013. That is an increase from the 44.7% seen a year prior, according to the Autodata Corporations numbers. Japanese manufacturers Toyota, Honda, and Nissan had a combine fall in shares of 31.8%.
