  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Provides Tips for Moving Cross Country

(Transportation-News.com, July 05, 2013 ) Perth. Australia -- With the housing industry picking up and unemployment rates lowering, moving cross country is happening more often than it has in the past, and unfortunately, so are moving company scams. The highest concentration of cross-country moves is during the summer, so in time for the influx, The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration wants to provide tips for movers to have an easy, less-stressful time moving when trusting their belongings to a professional moving company.

The most important thing to do before moving is to contact a reputable moving company. The FMCSA says to avoid brokers and look for reviews on the company and see if they have any complaints filed against them with the Better Business Bureau. Also make sure to find out if the company is insured and what policies they have in case of an accident.

Professional moving companies should also be licensed and have the proper authority to move. If a mover isn’t registered at protectyourmove.gov, they are probably not a reputable company with a license to most across state lines.

The FMCSA also says to get a written on-site estimate of how much it will cost to move a home. Written estimates can be upheld by the law, but a phone estimate cannot. One of the most important things to secure a move financially is to have signed estimate by the mover that both parties agree to.

There are several warning signs to a non-reputable moving company. The first, many scammers will answer their business telephone with “moving company” rather than the company’s actual name. Another warning sign in this category is that the company’s website doesn’t have a local address and no information about registration, licensing or insurance. This is because in certain areas, they may have different names for their scam business that may be operating all over the country. Also, never agree to a large deposit before the move or sign blank or incomplete moving contract documents.
