  • Adding a Teen to Your Car Insurance Policy Will Nearly Double Your Premium

(Transportation-News.com, July 26, 2013 ) San Jose, CA -- According to a new report, sponsored by InsuranceQuotes.com and conducted by Quadrant Information Services, adding a driver age sixteen to nineteen to a couple's car insurance policy will significantly raise the couples rates. A higher rate is expected when adding a teen to a car insurance policy but in most states the rate increase will almost double your premium.

Quadrant calculated the rates in each state using the largest insurance companies under the following criterion: The policy covers up to $300,000 for all injuries and $100,000 injury liability for one person. The couples are both forty-five years old and have good credit as well as clean driving records. They each drive less than ten miles to work each day and drive a 2012 Ford F150, Honda CRV or Civic, Toyota Camry or Prius.

According to the study, the increase in policy rates range from eighteen percent in Hawaii (Hawaii does not allow the consideration of age, gender or driving experience when calculating rates) to one hundred and sixteen percent in Arkansas.

In Illinois, the couple will have to pay an additional ninety percent after adding a teenage driver. That is higher than the national average of eighty-four percent and the twenty-fifth largest increase in the country. On average ninety-six percent of the increases are attributed to male teens in comparison to only seventy-two percent of the increase arising from female teen drivers. This is not something new; female drivers have traditionally been less of a risk to insurance companies than their male counterparts have.
