    About the book

Will Nihgate, also known as Dusk, finds himself in a precarious position. Admittedly, he has been in a number of these in his short but active career as a masked vigilante. None, however, have been more potentially fatal as this.

An unconscious Dusk has been placed in a large glass box. Just as he begins to recover his senses, Dusk feels a burst of cold water shooting into his face. He gets up; the water is rising quickly. Soon it will be up to the top, and Dusk would in that case drown. The fearful and enigmatic John Skeleton looks on, somewhat apologetically. Skeleton seems determined that, whatever good Dusk may have done up to now, enough finally will be enough. "My apologies," Skeleton murmurs, as Dusk is forced to hold his breath. The water is at the top, and the situation is beginning to look very final. Just then there is a shattering burst of gunfire, and the box collapses. Skeleton flees, and the soaked and sputtering Dusk flops free. When he has recovered his breath, Dusk has but one thing on his mind: payback.

Magnificent Things is a nuanced, powerfully written sci-fi tale. McNichols touches confidently on such enduring themes as personal self-fulfillment, loyalty, and conflicting notions of justice. McNichols's handling is brisk, and the reader will turn pages rapidly even as they are edified. The city of New Danko--which reminds this reader of Chicago--is under constant and ever-rising threat. New Danko's citizens are beleaguered: buffeted by so many shocks, they have fallen into a tepid state of resignation. Dusk and his companions may represent New Danko's only chance for peace and freedom in a complex and challenging world.
