(Transportation-News.com, September 28, 2016 ) A torque converter allows a vehicle engine to spin independently of the transmission. When the engine turns slowly (for instance when the vehicle is idling at a traffic signal), the amount of torque passing through the torque converter to the transmission is small; however, it requires light pressure on the brake pedal. When the driver applies more pressure on the accelerator, the engine revs up and pumps more fluid into the torque converter. Thus, more torque is transmitted to the wheels.
