  • Ford Country Partners With Grant-A-Gift Autism Foundation in Las Vegas

(Transportation-News.com, August 02, 2017 ) In a move that demonstrates how businesses can be “a force for good in the Las Vegas community,” Ford Country Las Vegas has teamed up with Fox 5 KVVU-TV to donate $100 to Grant a Gift Autism Foundation for every day the temperature reaches 100 degrees this summer.

Judging from the number of 100-degree days already on record in 2017, the foundation will be able to put a good sum of money to use on a worthy cause.

“The donations we're prepared to make show businesses can be a force for good in the Las Vegas community,” Ford Country General Manager Brad Cambridge said. “Ford Country is very proud to be part of this effort. So as far as we're concerned, we can't have enough 100+ degree days this summer.”

Foundation is “a gift,” Cambridge says

The Grant a Gift Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps children, youth and their families fight autism by providing:

    • Diagnostic and treatment funding

    • Support services

    • Vocational training

    • Transition planning

    • Educational services

And it's a cause Cambridge hopes will receive more public attention -- on sweltering and mild summer days alike. Ford Country is Las Vegas' premier Ford dealership, offering a wide range of new and pre-owned vehicles for purchase or lease.

Similar to other foundations that face cutbacks in federal funding, Grant a Gift acts as a “community safety net by filling in treatment and funding gaps not covered by state and federal resources or insurance,” according to its website, www.grantagiftfoundation.org.

This is no small feat, so the foundation collaborates with other state agencies and groups so children with Autism Spectrum Disorder can enjoy a better quality of life in Nevada and transition successfully to adulthood.

In fact, a partnership with the University of Nevada and Las Vegas School of Medicine enabled the foundation to recently move into the UNLV Ackerman Autism Center, located at 630 S. Rancho Road in Las Vegas. It promises to be a model of its kind for the care of autistic children and youth in Las Vegas

Noting about 1 in 68 children are afflicted with autism, Cambridge said the Grant a Gift Foundation “is itself a gift” to the residents of Las Vegas.

“Their work makes our donation effort even more meaningful,” he said, “especially if you look at the facts and statistics and see how many lives autism affects.”

Autism affects many Las Vegas families

The facts and statistics Cambridge are referring to are compelling – and would stir the heart of any parent:

    • More than 7,000 children and youth in Nevada live with some form of autism.

    • The cost of caring for an autistic child averages $60,000 a year.

    • Insurance typically covers only between 30 and 40 percent of the care.

    • Autism is the fastest-growing, serious developmental disability in the United States, but there is no cure on the horizon.

    • Funding for medical research in autism ranks behind cancer, diabetes and AIDS, but its prevalence is higher than the three conditions combined.

Other Las Vegas residents may complain about the oppressive heat, Cambridge said. But he said he will “let out a cheer” every day the temperature climbs to 100 degrees or more.
