  • Ford's Annual Consumer Trend Report Assesses Consumer Attitudes and Values

(Transportation-News.com, August 03, 2017 ) Ford Motor Company's fifth annual trend report shows consumers are "rethinking their priorities and assessing what really matters to them, revealing shifts in how they define prosperity, value material possessions and use their time."

Two of the report's most startling findings: at a time in which truth is more of a concept than a reality and tends to be subjective in nature, two-thirds of adults say it has never been more difficult to find fact-based information, while only 55 percent say that what they post on social media is what they really think.

    Wide-ranging questions guide Ford research

Since Ford's initial trend report in 2012, the company has been “committed to analyzing upcoming trends that drive and motivate consumers: the importance of trust and transparency, the prevalence of shifting gender roles in the workplace and the global shift towards sustainability and limiting environmental footprints.”

The Looking Further with Ford 2017 Trend Report identified the responsibility for triggering change on societal issues from civil rights to the environment alternates between individuals and institutions. This insight will help Ford frame its goals as a vehicle and mobility company while "reaffirming its commitment to being a positive influence in consumers' lives, regardless of whether they own a vehicle."

Ford executives take the long view

“What’s fascinating is how Ford is adapting and innovating – offering customers and society at large tangible ways to improve their mobility needs and ultimately, their daily way of life,” said Sheryl Connelly, Ford's Global Trend and Futuring Manager and a contributor to the 2017 report.

Ford Country’s General Manager Brad Cambridge found a silver lining in consumers' ongoing concerns about natural resources. He pointed to Ford's innovations with hybrid and fully energized vehicles, as well as its use of such products as castor oil, coconut fiber, nectar, recycled bottles and soybeans in its vehicles as proof of Ford's ongoing commitment to being environmentally responsible.

“These are the things that matter to Ford customers and what they talk to us about,” Cambridge said of his dealership. “When all the pieces fit like this, it's good to know Ford is, as usual, on the right track.”

2017 report reveals shifts in attitudes

Some other key findings of the 2017 trend report include:

    • Truth is influenced by perception and reinforced by like-minded viewpoints, with 80 percent of adults saying media outlets offer more opinions than objective news coverage.

    • Consumers' definition of “the good life” includes not only possessions but also experiences and values, with 68 percent of adults saying they care less about material objects than they did in the past.

    • Adults rationalize how they spend time rather than declaring it “wasted,” with 72 percent of adults saying that their definition of “wasting time” is different than it was in the past.

    • Faced with so many choices, consumers are reluctant to commit and prefer to “sample first,” with 73 percent of adults saying the Internet creates more choices than they need or want.

That last finding is just fine with Cambridge, who welcomes Las Vegas residents to visit Ford Country and “sample” as many Ford vehicles as they like.
