  • ATVInsuranceRates.com Reports Child ATV Accidents Are Preventable

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 22, 2011 ) Black Mountain, NC -- Children account for one third of the 150,000 ATV related injuries each year and 25% of ATV deaths. A new study presented to the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that the majority of those accidents are related to three causes: lack of helmet use, too many riders on one unit, or riding the wrong size unit. All three are preventable.

Every one who rides an ATV should wear a helmet. It is even more important for children, who are more irresponsible and prone to risk taking, to have a helmet on at all times, whether operating or simply riding.

    Unless riding.

Unless an ATV is build for a passenger, only one person should be on it. Carrying passengers on a vehicle that is not built for them, changes the center of gravity and can lead to rollover accidents. Rollovers are the most common cause of injury for ATV riders.

The study found that all of the children injured had been riding adult sized ATVs instead of more age appropriate vehicles. Modern vehicles can weigh up to 800 lbs and have top speeds of 80 mph. How is a child supposed to handle that safely?

The most loving thing that a parent can do is send their child through a rider safety course before allowing them to operate an ATV. These vehicles are as fast as some cars and nearly as massive. Would anyone let their child jump in the car without a car safety course? So, why let them on an ATV without one?

    About ATVInsuranceRates.com:

Too many all-terrain vehicle owners neglect to carry an ATV insurance policy on their vehicle. However, the fact that liability coverage is mandatory in most states when riding on public lands, as well as the high rate of ATV injuries and accidents underscores the need to insure your ATV. Fortunately, ATV insurance rates are fairly low.
