(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 24, 2012 ) Tulsa, OK -- Privacy advocates will have a field day with the latest bill being tabled in the Oklahoma state legislature. The bill allows police officers to stop a vehicle to check if the driver has insurance or not, a legal requirement in all 50 states, although the amount of insurance mandated varies from state to state.
Then there are the case stories of people who have been hit by uninsured motorists, trotted out by advocates of the law to exemplify the need for the law. Such stories certainly tug at the heart, but are they really significant in numbers enough to justify a law such as Oklahoma's House Bill 2525?
State Representative Steve Martin, author of the current bill, states that the bill doesn't just "give theÂ…officer the ability to pull your car over because he wants to." He goes on to explain that the vehicle must come up in the system as uninsured in order for the police to pull someone over.
Still, says David Tacket, a member of Oklahomans for Liberty, the bill gives law enforcement too much unchecked authority. The group's website, www.libertyok.com, advertises that they are "fighting for constitutional conservative values," and has posted online the photographs of all state legislators currently in favor of abolishing the state income tax.
