(Transportation-News.com, August 18, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Division of Motor Vehicles licensing station is facing unexpected problems due to staff shortage. The ongoing crisis has caused drivers to wait in long queues for several hours, according to a report by mitchellrepublic.com.
The source further explained that the long line problem was expected to occur and the demand has gradually eased out. However, the licensing bureau has continued its excellent work on the issue to come up with the best possible solution.
Cynthia Gerber, the program director for the state’s driving license program, admitted the understaffing problem had occurred at the Mitchell location and was being addressed by bringing in staff from neighboring bureaus and that necessary steps have been take to make sure that similar issues are avoided in the future.
“The reason that the wait times in the southeast region were longer was because, number one, summer is typically busy and, number two, we had a large number of vacancies from the spring into summer,” Gerber said.
Staff shortages and boiling hot summers have certainly added to frustrations of the visiting drivers. So hostile is the environment at the location, the Federal Government got involved to lay out a six point plan to sort out problems which include extended hours of operation, immediate hiring and better pay rates for employees along with much needed overtime.
The plan also included a very effective system of booking appointments in advance. Vacancies have already been advertised and a new examiner has also been hired to ensure smooth operations.
“We’re still in a training phase. We can’t just put them at the counter right away,” she said.
“It takes time to work through it,” said Merlyn Haak, a senior driving examiner.
“The staff from that area covers the whole area. If we have a vacancy in Mitchell, then someone comes in to cover,” she added. “We were down several staff people in that area, and that’s led to the wait times, along with the busy summer months.”
