  • New Navy radio system frequency interfering with garage door openers reports GryphonGarageDoors.com.au

(Transportation-News.com, August 22, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- After facing a troublesome malfunctioning of garage door openers and the prospect of a hefty charge, the residents of Hillcrest senior retirement community have decided to correct the problem themselves.

For the past couple of weeks, the door openers began failing as they operate on the same frequency between 380 and 399.9 megahertz. This frequency is a radio system being used at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton. Recently, about 50 people reported that their garage door openers having some issues and were not working properly.

Previously the system was debuted by the Navy in July 2011 as a way to connect with civilian first responders. It is now reported that this system is reportedly causing interference problems at many U.S. military installations around the country. According to the Day, this radio system created problems in Groton, New London, Waterford, Montville and Gales Ferry in the month of July.

In order to get rid of the problem, the community residents asked a local company to solve the problem, but that company was charging $200 as the fee to solve the problem. According to the company, the charges are for the installation of a dual frequency kit to correct the problem.

Since the price of the installation was more than the expectations of the residents and they were not able to afford it, it led Tom Fitzgerald, a local resident of Hillcrest, to step up and find some affordable and alternative solution.

Following his intention, Fitzgerald searched the internet to get the solution. With the help of the world wide web, he was able to purchase the necessary kit online for $25 that did the job. Fitzgerald is now planning to install the kit himself and get rid of the problem.

He said, “I'm waiting for my mailman each day now. I know some people have paid as much as $300 to have their door fixed.”

Fitzgerald added that he dealt with the Overhead Door Co. of Norwich, Inc., despite the fact that the company told him that it would cost $95 for a dual frequency radio receiver and transmitter.
