  • Michelin decides to replace 81,000 faulty tires free of cost reports SpinnyThings.com.au

(Transportation-News.com, August 23, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to businessweek.com, tire manufacturing giant, Michelin, has voluntarily recalled about 841,000 Uniroyal and BF Goodrich tires because the thread can separate, resulting in rapid air loss.

Credit should be given to Michelin for taking steps to ensure drivers safety. According to the stats released by the company, separation was reported on around 150 tires. The top officials at Michelin have said the safety of drivers is above everything else and therefore, the voluntary recall was immediate to avoid any injuries or other losses.

Michelin North American in Greenville has already started to collect the faulty tires. For more details the company has requested the involved parties to visit their website or call their toll free numbers.

Although no injuries or deaths have been reported as of yet, the company wants to make sure that only best quality product reaches its customers. They have also decided to replace the tires free of cost. The tires were originally made as replacements for commercial heavy-duty full sized vans and lightweight trucks, the source further added.

The quality control team at one of the sites noticed an increase in the number of problems with Uniroyal and BF Goodrich tires and thought it was very important to the safety of the drivers, said Director of Technical Affairs at Michelin, Mike Wischhusen.

"We're taking this proactive action in order to protect our consumers and the driving public." Wischhusen said.

"We constantly monitor our products performance in the field and it was our own internal quality systems that caught this issue," Wischhusen said. "We caught it very early based on a very small number of returns."

Michelin also conducted internal tests to confirm the problem with the tires and it says the issues have been corrected in the more recent cases.

"A tire is a complex thing. There is rarely one thing you can pinpoint to cause something like this," Wischhusen said.
