(Transportation-News.com, September 22, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- For the fourth year in a row, the 1994 Honda Accord is the most stolen car in the United States. The car is said to top the list primarily due to its lack of security features. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau in 2011, over 7,500 Accords from the 1994 model year were stolen. The 1998 Honda Accord was the second most stolen car.
Joe Brosius, a retired police officer from Tempe Arizona says car thieves are stealing older vehicles because the safety and security features don’t have the standard that are built in newer cars. Brosius now heads the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators.
Brosius said in a phone interview with SFGate that that newer vehicles are equipped with features that make them harder to hot-wire. Honda Motor Co. added a security feature called the “immobilizer system” in the 1997 and 1998 models.
Ford Motor Company’s full-size pick ups from 2006 were the third most stolen cars last year. That made the first time a truck made the top three from the National Insurance Crime Bureau since 2000.
The most commonly stolen cars does vary by location. In New York, the 2000 Honda Civic was the most stolen car, the 1994 Honda Accord was the most stolen in New Jersey and in Connecticut, more 1997 Honda Accords were stolen than any other vehicle.
The NICB uses the data to help track crime rates and assist motor companies in coming up with and installing better security features in their automobiles.
